What is your name?
My name is Juliette Gorges-Coppens, I was born in 1969 in Paris and I work and live in Berlin.
What kind of work do you create?
I am working with different medias, sketch, pastel, collage, stained glass but my favorite one is oil painting.
What do you define yourself as?
I am a colourist. I like colours, their personalities, the harmony or disharmony between them.
How long have you been practicing?
Sellf-taught, I have always enjoyed drawing.
What interests you about your medium or why do you use this medium?
I first got interested with oil painting because of the technical side. I stumbled upon a book that had a lot of advice and recipes and I was right away attracted by the craftsmanship it requires. I came up with some patterns just to be able to paint them. What came out of it was really beautiful, luminous and full of colours. Later on that aspect fell more into the background but I still prepare myself a most of the products I use.
When were you first exposed to your art form?
My first exhibition was with the collages in a Bank in Paris in 2000, then the stained glasses in 2008, and my first women Portraits exhibition was in 2011 at the Centre LGBT in Paris.
What kind of work do you want to create, or what work are you inspired by that you would like to strive for/emulate?
I admire painters like Tamara de Lempicka, Alex Katz, David Hockney, Ann Redpath, Henri Matisse, Vincent van Gogh. I am inspired by the light, the colours, the feelings.
Every artist loses inspiration, or has “writer’s block.” What do you do to push through it?
Talking with my partner , my teacher job, reading, visiting museum, watching movies, walking, swimming…
What limitations do you find with your medium?
I don’t think this medium has limitations in its process of artistic creation, but with regard to the audience reach, it’s not so easy to find the right place to show the women portraits I think, mostly because of their subject matter.
You are not allowed to use your medium anymore, what medium do you choose to begin and why?
Writing.
Are you currently working on a project you’d like to plug?
Yes, I am working of another “Frise ” of women.
